Tarlov cysts, also called perineural cysts, are fluid-filled sacs that form along the nerve roots of the spine, most often near the base of the spine. They are often found unexpectedly and may cause no symptoms, though larger ones can press on nearby nerves and cause pain or weakness. An MRI may show these cysts along the spinal nerve roots. Finding a Tarlov cyst provides a baseline for monitoring and may help explain symptoms such as lower back pain, leg pain, or bladder changes.
