Tethered cord syndrome

Musculoskeletal & Spine

Tethered cord syndrome happens when the spinal cord is abnormally attached to surrounding tissue at the base of the spine, restricting its movement. It may be present from birth or develop over time and can cause gradual back pain, leg weakness, and bladder or bowel changes. An MRI may show a low-lying or restricted spinal cord consistent with tethering. Finding tethered cord syndrome early may allow for surgical release before progressive neurological symptoms develop or worsen.
