A thoracic disc herniation happens when a disc in the mid-back region bulges or ruptures. It is less common than cervical or lumbar herniation but can press on the spinal cord and cause significant symptoms. An MRI may show changes in the thoracic spine consistent with disc herniation. Finding a thoracic disc herniation early may allow for management before it causes spinal cord compression or neurological symptoms.
