An appendiceal mucocele is a widening of the appendix caused by a build-up of mucus inside it. Most are harmless but some are linked to a low-grade tumour. An MRI may show a widened fluid-filled appendix consistent with a mucocele. Finding an appendiceal mucocele early may allow for surgical removal before it ruptures or causes complications.
