A gastrointestinal stromal tumour, or GIST, is a type of tumour that develops in the lining of the digestive tract. They vary in how aggressive they are and can grow slowly over years. An MRI may show a mass associated with the bowel lining consistent with a GIST. Finding a GIST early, when it is small, may allow for surgical removal before it grows or spreads. MRI is effective for characterising GI stromal tumours, particularly for assessing local invasion and soft tissue extent.
