Hepatic iron overload

Abdomen & Pelvis

Hepatic iron overload refers to an abnormal build-up of iron in the liver. It can result from genetic conditions like haemochromatosis or from other causes. MRI is used to help detect and measure iron accumulation in the liver without the need for a biopsy. Identifying hepatic iron overload early may allow for treatment before it causes liver damage or affects other organs.
