Hydronephrosis is a swelling of the kidney caused by a build-up of urine due to a blockage. It can develop gradually and may be present without obvious symptoms. An MRI may show changes in kidney structure consistent with fluid build-up. Identifying hydronephrosis early allows for investigation and treatment of the underlying cause, which may help prevent further kidney function decline.
