An iliopsoas abscess is a collection of infected fluid within the iliopsoas muscle, which runs from the lower spine through the pelvis to the upper thigh. It can develop from a nearby infection in the spine, bowel, or other structures, and may cause groin or hip pain, fever, and difficulty walking. An MRI may show fluid collection and changes consistent with infection in this muscle. Finding an iliopsoas abscess early may allow for drainage and antibiotic treatment before the infection spreads or causes serious complications.
