Inflammatory bowel disease can cause complications beyond the bowel, affecting joints, the spine, liver, and skin. These manifestations outside the bowel can develop independently of bowel symptoms. An MRI may show changes in affected structures consistent with extraintestinal IBD involvement. Finding extraintestinal complications of IBD early may allow for treatment before they cause significant organ or joint damage.
