Liver fibrosis is the build-up of scar tissue in the liver that happens in response to repeated injury or inflammation. It is an earlier stage of liver damage than cirrhosis and may be present for years without causing obvious symptoms. An MRI may show changes in liver texture and structure that could suggest the presence of fibrosis. Finding liver fibrosis before it progresses to cirrhosis may allow for treatment and lifestyle changes that could help slow or reverse the scarring process.
