Mesenteric ischaemia

Abdomen & Pelvis
Blood Vessels & Circulation

Mesenteric ischaemia happens when blood flow to the intestines is reduced, leaving the bowel lining without enough oxygen. Ongoing forms can develop gradually and cause vague abdominal symptoms. An MRI may show changes in the blood vessels supplying the bowel, consistent with reduced blood flow. Identifying ongoing mesenteric ischaemia early may allow for treatment before it progresses to acute bowel injury.
