Metastatic cancer

Whole Body Systems

Metastatic cancer refers to cancer that has spread from its original site to other parts of the body. By definition, this represents advanced disease and is rarely found as a first discovery in a person with no symptoms. In occasional cases, spread to an organ may be identified on imaging before the primary cancer has been diagnosed. An MRI may show changes across multiple areas that could be consistent with metastatic involvement. Identifying metastatic spread early may expand treatment options and allows for faster clinical management. MRI contributes to whole-body staging and can identify metastatic deposits across multiple organ systems in a single session.
