A perianal fistula is an abnormal channel that forms between the anal canal and the skin nearby. It can develop from infection or inflammation and may be linked to Crohn's disease. An MRI may show the path of a fistula in the perianal region. Finding a perianal fistula allows for surgical planning and management before it causes recurrent infection or complications. MRI is the gold standard for perianal fistula assessment and surgical planning.
