Renal cortical thinning refers to a reduction in the thickness of the outer layer of the kidney, often indicating long-term kidney disease or a prior injury. It can develop silently over many years. An MRI may show changes in kidney size and outer layer thickness consistent with long-term disease. Identifying renal cortical thinning early allows for management of underlying causes that may help slow further kidney function decline.
