Renal infarction

Abdomen & Pelvis
Blood Vessels & Circulation

A renal infarction happens when blood supply to part of the kidney is suddenly cut off, causing damage to the surrounding tissue. It can happen without obvious symptoms and may be found unexpectedly on imaging. An MRI may show changes in kidney tissue consistent with a loss of blood supply. Finding evidence of a renal infarction prompts investigation into the underlying vascular cause, which may help reduce the risk of further events.
