Retroperitoneal fibrosis

Abdomen & Pelvis

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a condition where fibrous tissue develops behind the abdominal cavity, the space inside the abdomen that houses your digestive organs. This fibrous tissue can put pressure on surrounding structures including the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys. An MRI may show fibrous tissue around the aorta and surrounding structures. Finding retroperitoneal fibrosis early may allow for treatment before it causes ureteric obstruction or kidney damage.
