Ulcerative colitis is an ongoing inflammatory bowel condition that affects the lining of the colon and rectum. It can cause periods of inflammation and remission over many years. An MRI may show changes in the colon lining consistent with inflammation. Identifying ulcerative colitis early allows for treatment to manage inflammation, which may help reduce the long-term risk of complications. Colonoscopy is the primary diagnostic tool for ulcerative colitis, however MRI enterography is valuable for assessing bowel wall involvement.
